Private employers in America cut jobs for the first time since April, shedding 123,000 positions last month.
This is in stark contrast to the 88,000 jobs that the economists over at Refinitiv thought would be gained during December 2020.
Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, stated: “As the impact of the [virus] on the labor market intensifies, December posted the first decline since April 2020.”
The leisure and hospitality industry suffered the most job losses, with 58,000 positions lost in December.
I just hope that this new year brings plenty of new jobs, sources of income, and a stable economy, as we finally get back to some kind of normalcy.
Meanwhile, we talk about him a lot on this channel, Mr. Wonderful, aka Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary, made some interesting comments about the stimulus unemployment benefits that should be offered to millions of struggling Americans.
Instead of the $600 stimulus checks, O’Leary stated: “I would have preferred that Congress took the money and gave it all directly to individuals that are in dire straits due to extended unemployment as a result of the pandemic.”
He explained: “If you became unemployed after March and are still unemployed, you get $2,000 per month for the next 12 months or until you find work.”
Our good pal Michele Evermore, from the National Employment Law Project, agrees with Mr. Wonderful, saying: “Money going to people who otherwise would have no income isn’t just addressing the most urgent need, it goes to the people with the highest propensity to spend it.”
That sounds good to me, 12 months of $2,000 a month in extended enhanced unemployment benefits would help millions of Americans to fully recover from the crazy storm of 2020.
Finally, Georgia’s Senate run-off results could mean a Blue Wave that might make the national minimum wage a more liveable $15 an hour.
Jon Ossoff, one of the alleged winners of yesterday’s Senate vote, tweeted recently: “We can raise the minimum wage to $15. But we have to win the Senate.”
With the current national minimum wage at a measly $7.25 an hour, which amounts to $15,080 for a full-time, year-round worker.
This sounds like a great idea to me, as everyone living in America and working a full time position deserves to earn enough to live on.
