But first, it’s a gloomy day for unemployment benefits as Congress and the President refuse to sign off on the bill.
Lawmakers in Congress and White House officials have indicated that they remain uncertain if Mr. Trump will relent and sign the legislation, issue a formal veto or just leave it unsigned.
Trump could still sign the bill containing the relief measures, but even if he does so PUA and PEC payments will be halted for at least one week.
Expanded unemployment benefits and relief payments may still be reinstated if Trump signs the bill in the coming days, or if Congress reconvenes to craft a new stimulus that meets the President’s approval.
The House is planning to vote on Monday to vote in a stand-alone bill that contains the $2,000 checks.
Meanwhile, for some living in Polk County, Florida help is on the way with a plan to make another $2.5 million available to help people pay their mortgages and rent.
Polk County Housing and Neighborhood Development Manager Tamara West stated, “There are a lot of people out here still hurting. So, we’re thinking about 750 clients will be able to be assisted.”
The latest round of housing help will provide up to $5,000 on a first come first serve basis.
Applications can be submitted on the Polka County website and payments are made directly to the mortgage holders or landlords.
President-elect Joe Biden has called on President Donald Trump to sign the relief bill, warning that any further delay has “devastating consequences” for Americans.
Biden stated, “It is the day after Christmas, and millions of families don’t know if they’ll be able to make ends meet because of President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign an economic relief bill approved by Congress with an overwhelming and bipartisan majority.”
Biden noted that the bill contains provisions for small businesses and extended unemployment benefits as well as stimulus checks and that it could help struggling families.
He continued: “This bill is critical. It needs to be signed into law now. But it is also a first step and down payment on more action that we’ll need to take early in the new year to revive the economy.”
Time is running out for many assistance programs, however, the House will vote on Monday and we are remaining positive that something will get passed as pressure mounts.
States will issue payments for weeks that begin the moment the bill is signed.
Make sure to check the available assistance programs that are available in your state.
Regular state programs aren’t affected only PUA and PEUC have ended.
Many states are offering Extended Benefits which trigger on based on the unemployment rate and provide additional six to 20 weeks of federal aid to people who have exhausted their state benefits.
People currently collecting EB in states providing this aid will continue to receive it into January 2021 so makes sure your still applying for your state’s benefits to see if you’re eligible.
