The great state of Kentucky is offering in person assistance to help unemployment claimants in the Bluegrass State get their much needed unemployment benefits.

Governor Andy Beshear announced that Kentucky Career Centers will open for permanent face-to-face meetings with unemployment claimants for the first time in 12 months.

Beshear explained yesterday: “Know that we are working to get those open and we believe we can do it safely.”

He also said: “the state will make an online scheduling tool available for in-person appointments.”

This is great news for all of my viewers in Kentucky, and hopefully y’all can get the unemployment support necessary to get you your deserved unemployment benefits.

Meanwhile, here’s a situation that I’m sure a lot of you are in right now: have you already filed your tax return before the $10,200 unemployment tax exemption was signed into law in President Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan?

Fortunately, a recent article from MarketWatch explains how you can claim these tax refunds by taking action and file an amended income tax return that will claim the exemption.

According to the IRS, as of March 5th, 55.7 million tax returns have already been filed for 2020 tax season, which can be amended with tax Form 1040-X.

Tax experts at The Century Foundation stated: “Amending your return basically means that you re-file your return, but subtract up to $10,200 of [unemployment insurance] benefits. Depending on your tax rate, that could result in a refund check of more than $1,000.”

Finally, a group of about 20 House and Senate Democrats are pushing the IRS to help the millions of Americans that are hoping to use their $10,200 unemployment tax extension created in President Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package.

They explained in a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig: “We recognize the challenges of implementing this change in tax law during filing season, particularly as millions of Americans have already filed their tax returns for 2020.”

They continued: “Treasury and the IRS should conduct a robust public awareness campaign to ensure that individuals who received unemployment benefits in 2020 are aware of this tax exclusion and understand the actions that need to be taken to receive it.”

The letter also said: “This underscores the need for the Treasury and the IRS to take every action to ensure that all eligible individuals, including those who have already filed their 2020 tax return, are aware of and able to receive this critical relief.”

I completely agree with these efforts, and hope that some sort of automatic refund can be offered, or at least more guidance on how to get the roughly $1,000 back on your unemployment taxes.

If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, do your weekend a favor and apply today.

Visit your state’s PUA or UI website, upload your employment history and ID, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there, if that’s the case.

For honestly and truthfully filling out the application, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for over $20,000.

To all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, I know it sounds wild, but the PUA was made and extended just for people like you.
