Here’s your unemployment update for Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021

A new study published this week by Eliza Forsythe, a labor economist the University of Illinois, shows some alarming data regarding jobless Americans that can’t collect unemployment benefits and the need for $1,400 stimulus checks.

Her study concludes that at best, 30% of jobless Americans are currently collecting unemployment benefits.

This means that 70% of unemployed Americans, as many as 8 million people, are not receiving the disaster relief funds and extended enhanced unemployment benefits that they deserve.

Opting for $1,400 stimulus checks instead of our traditional unemployment systems, Forsythe explained: “This indicates that the current [unemployment insurance] system is not up to the task of targeting relief to the unemployed.”

She continued: “If the federal government is interested in providing relief to the unemployed, universal checks are likely the best way to provide support to the 70% who are outside of the UI system.”

I completely agree, and hear from so many of y’all in the comments that are in the same predicament. Hopefully we can get more stimulus unemployment funds soon to help get us through these tough times.

Meanwhile, 2 leading White House economic advisors are extremely worried about the current state of unemployment in America, and are urging “immediate action” from Congress and President Biden.

Jared Bernstein and Heather Boushey, members of the Council of Economic Advisers, estimate that as many as 7 million people might be out of work in 2021, and are asking for the approval of President Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package.

They explained in a blog post: “The costs of inaction are far higher than the costs of acting too aggressively. We should not wait for years for the economy to return to full employment and get the economy back to pre-pandemic expectations.”

They also stated: “We know that getting back to full employment, as quickly as possible, will make a major difference in the lives of tens of millions of people, particularly those most at risk of being left behind.”

Finally, some amazing news from Congressional Democrats that could mean thousands of dollars in unemployment benefits that you should have received in the first place.

Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Cindy Axne, announced a new bill yesterday that would waive taxes on the first $10,200 in unemployment benefits received during the craziness of 2020.

Drubin explained: “Families across the country are struggling to keep a roof over their head, food on the table, and to pay for health care and other necessities.”

He continued: “As we grapple with the economic pain of this pandemic, the bill I’m introducing today would provide tax relief to unemployed Americans so they can spend their benefits supporting their families and their communities.”

If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, get over the hump and apply today.

Check out your state’s PUA or UI website, give them your employment history and over identify yourself, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there if that’s the case.

For honestly and truthfully answering their questions, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for up to $20,000.

For all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, visit your state’s PUA website and get the unemployment benefits you are entitled to.
