Happy Thursday, which means we have to talk about the state of the US economy and unemployment numbers in this week’s jobs report from the Department of Labor (DOL).
Unfortunately, this week’s jobs report showed poor news for the economy, as the actual unemployment figures were higher than last week, and were well below the estimates of the economists from the DOW Jones.
The weekly report showed that 770,000 Americans filed their first time unemployment claims, which is higher than the previous week’s 725,000 revised initial claims.
These numbers are also below the 700,000 first time claims predicted by economists, which was off by a whopping 70,000 initial unemployment claims.
Hopefully we can start to see these numbers heading in the downward direction, as more Americans get the vaccine and get back to work with a fully recovered economy.
Meanwhile, the place that I call home, the great state of Nevada, recently offered a warning to unemployment claimants that are taking advantage of the system by “double dipping.”
With the state’s DETR office reevaluating unemployment claims that have completed their benefit year, Nevada has seen a rise in claimants “double dipping” UI and PEUC unemployment benefits when re-filing benefits, some without even knowing that they are doing so.
DETR spokesperson Rosa Mendez explained: “At this time, claimants who are still filing after getting to their Benefit Year End will need to have their claims reviewed to be sure they are collecting benefits from the proper program.”
Hopefully this will help clear up some of the confusion regarding refiling unemployment benefits after the initial benefit year ended, and be sure to talk with your state’s unemployment system for specific details on your claim to clear any confusion.
Finally, it’s looking like it could take some of the biggest tax preparers in the country some additional time to implement the new $10,200 unemployment tax credit in tax filings.
Fortunately, the government just gave everyone some breathing room, pushing the April 15th tax deadline to May 17th, and is requesting that people wait until further guidance is offered to file their taxes.
This will let big tax companies like TurboTax and H&R Block make the necessary software changes to their systems to account for the $10,200 tax credit offered to unemployed Americans.
Experts explained: “As a result, taxpayers who are eligible for the new break and typically file a return digitally should wait.”
While they aren’t telling Americans to procrastinate and wait until the last minute, it’s nice to know that we don’t have to rush to get our taxes done, with the new unemployment tax credit, in less than a month anymore.
If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, earn a cold one on Thirsty Thursday by applying today.
Simply check out your state’s PUA or UI website, show them your employment history and identifying documents, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there, if that’s the case.
For honestly and truthfully answering all their questions, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for over $20,000.
To all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, the PUA will help you get these amazing government disaster relief funds that you deserve.
